Every ITZY comeback comes with a bang and a cultural reset, and their new mini-album, Girls Will Be Girls, embodies their power as a group and the message of empowerment they have consistently conveyed to the world. After giving us some of their best music in 2024 with BORN TO BE and GOLD, 2025 started with a perfect solo debut by Yeji, and it’s now leading to a release that can only be described as one of their best yet. Girls Will Be Girls is top-tier ITZY, and here’s why!
The Title Track
ITZY is no stranger to powerful, jaw-dropping songs, but ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ might just be taking the cake. ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ is beyond powerful, with its grandiose feel, empowering message, and anthem-like quality. Listening to ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ makes you feel like you’re getting ready for a fight, and on top of that, it has some of the most catchy melodies. They serve vocals and insane energy throughout the song, but the dance break is really when ITZY does what ITZY does best: steal the show.
No one does a dance break quite like ITZY, and ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ is a song that allows every single member to shine, especially in that last chorus. But the killer choreography isn’t just in the break dance. Right from the bat, ITZY gave us one of their most impressive intros – and if you know anything about ITZY, it is that the list of iconic intros is long. If ‘BORN TO BE‘ was in your top songs of the year, like it was for us, ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ has a guaranteed spot for this year’s top songs. ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ is bold, fearless, and one of the most impactful releases of the year. Accompanied by a beautiful, cinematic music video about prejudice and the public eye, where they support and save each other, this is ITZY at their best.
The B-Sides
The themes of female empowerment, confidence, and boldness are recurrent in Girls Will Be Girls, and while ITZY has always been about embracing who you are, no matter what, it’s never been this impactful and strong. ‘Kiss & Tell’ keeps the energy up after the absolute bang that is ‘Girls Will Be Girls’, which is no easy task. And we’re very happy to announce that hyper-pop adjacent ITZY is back! ‘Kiss & Tell’ is confident and cheeky, with early 2010s vibes creating a type of club track with cyber-punk vibes. The effects used in their voices make the track all the more interesting and scratch the right side of our brain at every listen.
Starting softer, ‘Locked N Loaded’ embodies ITZY‘s growth. The build-up in the song truly recreates their power and their growing confidence. ‘Locked N Loaded’ is confident and a continuation of ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ with an energy that gets you ready for a fight. The element of an electric guitar in the outro is genius, adding another layer to the song and creating a fun play on words between “rock and roll” and “lock and load.”
‘Promise’ is unlike any of the songs in Girls Will Be Girls, but it’s a very ITZY song. It follows the same theme of empowerment but in a much softer manner. The pop ballad is full of emotions, sweetness, and care—a true love letter to each other and MIDZYs. True to its title, ‘Walk’ is a track simply made for a catwalk. It’s a confident and alluring track that combines elements of house, electronic, and dance. If you thought ‘Kiss & Tell’ was for the club, you’re not ready for ‘Walk.’ It’s all about confidence and asserting yourself, and if we close our eyes, we can already see ITZY vogue to this song (please, let it happen.)
Girls Will Be Girls is one of ITZY‘s most spectacular, mature, and powerful releases to date. Sticking to what makes them such a special group, they continue to push the boundaries, inspiring empowerment through their music and serving the best of the best. We knew from the first trailer that Girls Will Be Girls would be a shift in ITZY’s history, and the girls didn’t disappoint. Girls Will Be Girls is a masterpiece and a testament to ITZY’s talent and power as a group. The industry needs ITZY, and Girls Will Be Girls is exactly why.
