Calling Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. To Disney+

A trend we’ve been noticing on Disney+ that we love is that they’re taking some classic TV shows and movies and making versions for this generation. Not that we’re not going to watch it right along with them because we’re still children at heart. After some new Goofy’s How To shorts and a new version of Turner & Hooch, now it’s time for Doogie Howser, M.D. to be updated.

But this time, it’s Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. and we follow Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a 16-year-old prodigy trying to be both a teenager and have a budding medical career. In Hawai’i, no less! And of course Lahela wouldn’t be on her own. Her friends and ohana are there with her, in the form of her career-oriented mom, Dr. Clara Hannon (Kathleen Rose Perkins) – who’s also her supervisor at the hospital, – her dad Benny Kameāloha (Jason Scott Lee), her brothers, Kai (Matthew Sato) and Brian (Wes Tian) and her BFF, Steph (Emma Meisel). Other notable appearances will be her colleagues at the hospital, Dr. Lee (Ronny Chieng), Charles (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) and Noelani (Mapuana Makia) and Lahela’s crush, Walter (Alex Aiono).

Doogie Kameāloha starts streaming on Disney+ pretty soon. September 8, to be exact, with new episodes every Wednesday. And, because Disney loves to tease us before dropping something awesome, they also revealed the opening sequence so we can get a feeling of what we’re in for. It pays homage to the original Doogie Howser, M.D. by having the same song, but with a spin to remind us this is a new story. It was reimagined and performed by Wendy Wang and Jake Shimabukuro. Check out how awesome this sounds!

You see, we just know this show is going to be good. The cast is amazing, they’ve got Kourtney Kang as creator and executive producer and the premise itself is insanely appealing. Kang put a lot of her own experiences in the show, as she is also a mixed-race woman born in Hawai’i. Her fellow executive producers are Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, Dayna Bochco, Jesse Bochco, Erin O’Malley, Matt Kuhn and Justin McEwen.
