Dreamcatcher Turn Into VillainS in ‘OOTD’

With every single release, Dreamcatcher keeps it fresh, new, and unique. They truly never cease to surprise us and keep us on the edge of our seats. Dreamcatcher may pioneer the rock genre in K-Pop, but they are never satisfied with it only being about rock. Dreamcatcher are the queens of fusing rock with different genres, inspirations, and styles. Their latest comeback with VillainS is precisely that: a new side of Dreamcatcher that suits only them. As the first installment of their new VersuS series, the mini-album is everything we love about Dreamcatcher: the confidence, the rock, the diversity and variety in music, vocals, and so much more.

‘OOTD’

‘OOTD’ is different from anything you will hear in K-Pop and even from Dreamcatcher themselves. The song starts strong with punk influence, and the harsh and raw instrumentals continue throughout the song, including an addictive guitar riff and bold vocals. However, they mix that undertone with the sound of a typical girl-crush K-Pop concept. It’s sassy, overflowing with confidence, and cocky. You could even say Dreamcatcher‘s take on this is satire – but that’s ultimately up to interpretation.

In any case, ‘OOTD’ feels like a big middle finger to the industry and how they’ve constantly tried to fit Dreamcatcher in one of them. But it is no mystery that Dreamcatcher are beyond boxes and labels. They eventually always do what is true to them and stick to their roots. And that’s one thing that makes us love them even more.

‘OOTD’ might be unlike any other Dreamcatcher song, but it’s just as addictive and catchy as any of their title tracks – if not more. It also has a choreography to die for and is so satisfying to watch. Ultimately, ‘OOTD’ will be all you can think about for the next 24 hours or more… It happened to us.

A new series also means a new storyline to tie into the general Deukae lore, and this one is packed with lore. Everything surrounding the music video makes it so exciting and fun to watch. With Apocalypse, the Dreamcatcher members were the saviors who would save the earth. This time, they switch the narrative and take on the role of villains. When we say Dreamcatcher can do it all, we mean it in every single aspect.

VillainS

VillainS has three very different b-sides from each other, exemplifying once again just how diverse and varied Dreamcatcher‘s discography is. Each one of these songs is a masterpiece; everyone deserves to have them in their lives. VillainS is already a highlight in their discography that encapsulates most facets and sides of Dreamcatcher’s sound while adding new elements.

‘Rising’

If you’re a fan of Dreamcatcher’s staple rock sound, ‘Rising’ will definitely be the one for you. Dreamcatcher are the pioneers of rock in K-Pop; there is no doubt about it. In case there was, ‘Rising’ proves why they hold that title. Not only does ‘Rising’ have a banger of a guitar riff and a production that simply slaps, but it shows how well their vocals fit rock music. They shine through and through in this song. It has some vintage feel, reminiscent of some of their early songs, mixed with new elements that make it feel so new and fresh.

‘Shatter’

There is no way to truly describe ‘Shatter.’ It is an experience that cannot be put into words. ‘Shatter’ is a super unique and very surprising song with a production that will honestly blow your mind. And when you think it can’t get any better, it does exactly that. Taking inspiration from Medusa in Greek mythology, ‘Shatter’ gives out a dark and tragic energy. And it goes so hard. ‘Shatter’ is already an incredible gem in Dreamcatcher‘s discography like no other.

‘We Are Young’

VillainS closes off with ‘We Are Young,’ the most pop song in the mini-album. It has similar influences to their 2020 b-side ‘Can’t get you out of my mind,’ with that EDM-pop sound reminiscent of the early 2010s. The anthem feel is already enough to make us emotional, but the ad-libs in the bridge and the last chorus will give you the chills. Truly, these girls never fail to blow us away with their vocals.

‘We Are Young’ offers a hopeful and comforting message about the future and all of its possibilities. They sing “we are young” to remind you that there is much to look forward to, that things change, and that time will heal all wounds. It is a message that can be interpreted in many ways, but it never ceases to be comforting and important. This last song encapsulates the safe place Dreamcatcher have created with their music. If anything, VillainS made us fall in love with them all over again – and we never fell out of love in the first place.
