Let’s ‘Step Back’ And Get To Know The Members Of SM Entertainment’s Girls On Top

If you’re anything like us at THP, you love SM Entertainment’s boy super-group SuperM and have spent years hoping for a female version so our favorite girls can shine. Finally, 2022 is shaping up to be our year – we’re getting just that with Girls On Top! They just debuted with their bold track ‘Step Back,’ and we can’t get enough. We got our first preview of the song when they performed it at the SMTown 2022 New Year’s concert earlier this month.

Girls On Top’s lineup will change for different concepts, letting all of our favorite SM ladies get their time to shine. The group’s first rendition is called GOT The Beat and includes both soloists and members of groups like aespa and Red Velvet. Seven of our favorite girls in K-Pop in one supergroup? Sign us up! Let’s take a look at who’s in Girls On Top and fangirl over them together.

BoA

BoA has been a K-Pop icon since she debuted in August 2000, and she was one of the first idols to be promoted worldwide. She was discovered at the age of 11 and released her debut album at 13, which we can’t even imagine doing. More recently, she worked with aespa on their reimagining of S.E.S.’s ‘Dreams Come True.’ Her work ethic and talent are so admirable!

Hyoyeon

We’ve loved Hyoyeon since her days as the main dancer and rapper of Girls’ Generation, and we’re constantly adding her solo songs as HYO to our playlists. Before her 2007 debut with GG, she learned hip-hop and jazz dance from a young age and even performed as one of BoA’s backup dancers in 2005. But, even after over a decade in the spotlight, we know Hyoyeon has a lot more to show us as a member of GOT The Beat!

Karina

Karina became an SM trainee in 2016 and worked hard for three years to earn her rightful spot as the leader in aespa. You may recognize her from Taemin’s ‘WANT’ music video, in which she appeared as a backup dancer in 2019. The first concert she ever went to was a Girls’ Generation show, so she must be over the moon now that she’s in a group with two of their members!

Seulgi

As Red Velvet’s lead vocalist and main dancer, you already know Seulgi is one of the most talented girls around! She spent seven years as an SM trainee, and her hard work certainly paid off. She loves Beyoncé (relatable), voiced a character in Trolls World Tour, and makes even more music as part of the RV sub-unit Irene & Seulgi. We can’t get enough of Seulgi and can’t wait to see what she does as part of Girls On Top.

Taeyeon

One of the most celebrated female vocalists in K-Pop, Taeyeon debuted with Girls’ Generation in 2007 and has been included in two of the group’s sub-units over the years, as well as releasing her own gorgeous solo songs. She’s been open about struggling with depression, and we love that she’s so vulnerable in the name of helping her fans feel less alone. She sang ‘Into The Unknown’ on the Korean version of the Frozen II soundtrack and has collabed with more of our faves like KEY and JONGHYUN!

Wendy

Wendy knew from the time she was only six that she wanted to be a singer – main vocalist things! It took less than two years to train for her to debut with Red Velvet. She also released her own mini-album, Like Water, in 2021. Like Seulgi, she voiced a character in Trolls World Tour and even served as the Korean voice for one of the main characters. She can play four instruments and is constantly sending positivity to Red Velvet’s ReVeLuvs!

Winter

It’s been over a year since aespa debuted, and we’re still not over Winter’s fluttery vocals! She’s the group’s lead vocalist and dancer, as well as their visual member. Just like us, she loves Harry Styles and cookies. She’s nicknamed the Taeyeon of K-Pop’s fourth generation, so it’s awesome to see the two in a group together.
